Supporting local business to attract and retain jobs

I oppose an increase in commercial tax rates over the term of the incoming council. The 3% increase accepted by businesses for Galway’s 2020 European Capital of Culture bid should be re-applied for an Economic Development Fund from 2021 onwards.

Unrated commercial premises must be levied with an annual service charge until rates valuation is complete. I will continue to support no increase of the current Local Property Tax, and freeze commercial water charges until the systemic leakages are brought under control in the city.  We have 93% leakage in some areas at present!

As a councillor I have successfully championed Galway’s businesses working together for mutual benefit. I led the successful team which saw Galway win the Best Enterprise Town Award, and helped develop the Credit Union’s Connect Card across retailers. I fully support The Village Salthill in attracting more business and tourism. Leisureland needs to be developed as a regional Confernce Centre, working with the Galway Conference Bureau.

I helped roll-out free WiFi in Salthill and across the city, and will continue to liaise with Galway’s Local Enterprise Office to assist small businesses across our community.
